Pet Portraits - what can you expect?

I've just finished my latest curly commission: 2 beautiful Labradoodles, and I thought I would take you through the process, just in case anyone wondered about commissioning something themselves and were too afraid to ask!

Now, although these 2 pups love each other they rarely pose together beautifully in the same photo. So, for this birthday commission I got hold of 8 photo's to pick and choose the best bits (and then had to request 2 more of Flo looking in the right direction, to match her to Lola's gaze!). Good photo's are the key really, along with lots of info about the pet themselves.

I picked my favourite two images and double checked that the client was happy with the composition idea. I rescaled the photos' on the computer so I could make sure I was sketching them proportionally to one another, then I got to work on a draft. I also ran this past the client to make sure he was 100% happy before I started.

He was, so off I went

composition plan and colour
filling in the detail piece by piece
building up layers of highlights and shadow
bringing it into focus with some sharp pencil work
Flo
Lola

The other thing that my client was delighted with was the £5 donation to the Dogs Trust. His girlfriend opened the parcel today for her birthday and said "it was the best present she had ever had, ever!".

Fantastic news

Happy Birthday Jo xx

  1. I know these 2 dogs and "Little Bird" has captured them perfectly. The likeness is unbelievable.
